Heart of Midlothian hope to extend the contract of Craig Halkett beyond the end of the season.
Talks are taking place with the centre-back after an impressive start to the campaign, where he has become a mainstay of Derek McInnes' side.
The 30-year-old is one of the players out of contract at the end of the season, but could follow Harry Milne and extend his stay at Tynecastle Park.
Halkett is currently the longest serving continuous player at the club, having been signed in 2019 by Craig Levein. He has now worked under six managers during his time at the club.
Hearts Standard understands talks over a new deal have been positive and have been ongoing for at least a couple of weeks, with all parties keen to get a deal done.
Halkett spoke of his desire to earn a new contract during the summer after working to get himself into the best shape possible.
He has only missed one game all season and that was due to rotation in the League Cup, while he has played more minutes this season than two of his previous three campaigns.
"That is the bigger picture. I've loved my time here. Been here seven years and the last two, going into three, haven't gone the way I wanted them to," he said.
"I feel like I owe myself and all the club, all the fans, a wee bit more to show what I can do here.
"Going into the last year of my contract, I want to play as many games as I can and see if I can earn another contract. And if it doesn't come, it doesn't come. It's all part of the bigger picture of getting myself in the best shape possible, play as many games so that come next year, if I'm still at Hearts or I'm somewhere else, I'm in good shape."
McInnes has spoken of wanting to have players in the building who provide continuity, who understand the club and the league and are key to the culture of the dressing room.
Halkett is one of those players.
"I'm really enjoying working with Craig because obviously he's a senior figure in the dressing room," McInnes told Hearts Standard.
"When I looked at him before I got to know the team as much as I know them now, I always thought he was one that could deal with that added responsibility.
"He's one of the Scottish boys I was keen to have a bigger influence. The influence on the pitch is what he's looking for more and that's why we're all pleased that he's managed to get the minutes and build on that."
