Lawrence Shankland has finished the 2023/24 Scottish Premiership campaign as the league’s top scorer with 24 goals in 37 appearances.

Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley was the Heart of Midlothian talisman’s closest challenger, rounding off the season on 18 goals, followed closely by Rangers captain James Tavernier (17), and Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski and Ibrox centre-forward Cyriel Dessers, who are each on 16.

It is the latest individual award for Shankland, who has already won the club’s players’ player of the year and fans’ player of the year, as well as becoming the first Hearts player to win the PFA Scotland player of the year gong and SFWA’s annual award.

Shankland has become the first Hearts player to finish as the league’s top scorer since John Robertson achieved the feat in 1990 with 17 goals to his name, and the Scotland internationalist is also the first player in maroon to score 30 in all competitions since the Tynecastle legend.

It is a slight improvement on Shankland’s final goal tally for the previous season, when he notched 21 goals in 37 appearances.

The 28-year-old is the first player not plying his trade for the Old Firm to finish as the Premiership’s outright top scorer since Kris Boyd achieved the feat with Kilmarnock in 2017/18. Ross County’s Regan Charles-Cook was tied with Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis on 13 goals in 2021/22.
