Charlie Mulgrew has questioned a lack of game time for Scotland striker Lawrence Shankland.

The Hearts forward was a late call-up to Steve Clarke's squad for matches against Georgia and Norway after Che Adams pulled out with an injury.

Shankland grabbed his opportunity though and netted a crucial equaliser against Georgia to end Scotland's run of three defeats on the bounce.

Former Scotland international Mulgrew was impressed by the impact of the 28-year-old and he reckons he should feature more for the national team.

"There wasn't many chances, probably three or four either way you could argue," Mulgrew told Sky Sports. "Scotland changed formation with a few changes and went to a back four, 4-3-3, the issue for me was playing that or a 4-2-3-1 and that requires wingers but they didn't have any in the squad.

"They had a lot of attacking midfielders so when you change a formation like that you'd expect wingers to be in the squad to play in their type of formation.

"I think that's what let Scotland down tonight, they never had wingers to stay high and wide and pin Georgia's back five.

"What will they have learned tonight? I think Steve Clarke would have learned that Lawrence Shankland is a right good option. In my opinion he's probably Scotland's best striker. He's the biggest goal threat, holds the ball in. When I was in a squad with him I was surprised how good a player he was at the time he was with Dundee United in the Championship.

"He's been around the fringes for a few years now and has scored goals when he's come on. But he's for some reason not been picked as regularly as Lyndon Dykes, Che Adams, Jacob Brown and players like that.

"When he comes on the pitch you know he's gonna get chances and he's probably gonna score them if he does. Surely Steve Clarke can see now he deserves more opportunities?"
